Step Four: Individual Investigation with Group Reinforcement

Direct students to Document C. Ask them to highlight phrases or sentences that might help them add to their list. Remind students that the colonists were, at this time, still British citizens. After students have had sufficient time to read and think about the document, have them discuss the phrases and sentences they marked in Step Three. Ask them to decide what relevant information they could add to their lists. Ask that each pair find another pair of students to “square” with. Have them repeat the process. Briefly discuss the phrases and sentences students have highlighted, and add information to the class list.
