Introduction

In this lesson, students learn how physical features (land forms) in what is now the United States affected the settlement patterns of early citizens.

This lesson addresses Topic 3 (History of the United States), Standard 5 (The causes and nature of various movements of large groups of people into and within the United States).

Time Frame

One hour class period.

Materials

  • Enlarged copies of U.S. postage stamps commemorating statehood
  • Three hand lenses
  • U.S. map (with state names clearly marked) for each student
  • Set of 10 small numbered stickers for each student
  • Chart paper
