John Smith Portrait

In 1607, John Smith was captured by Native Americans, who brought him before their leader Powhatan for trial. Several weeks later, he was released from the camp in friendship and escorted back to Jamestown. John Smith believed that the eleven-year-old Pocahontas, Powhatan’s daughter, saved his life.
